From a Personal Mission to a Global Solution
In 2017, we helped a close friend buy their first bitcoin. It was an exciting moment, but it also revealed a problem that stuck with us: “How can you safely store your seed phrases?”
Finding an answer wasn’t easy. One friend lost their seed phrases, along with 1.5 BTC—back then worth just $3,000. By December 2024, that same amount was worth over $142,000. Another friend, with a modest income, lost a similar amount of bitcoin. That money could have changed her life, but her seed phrases are gone forever.
When we received our own Ledger Nano hardware wallet, it came with a flimsy piece of paper. The instructions? Write down your 24 words with any pen and “store it safely.” There was no advice about the critical importance of a 25th PassPhrase or the dangers of a single point of failure. We felt like carrying a ticking time bomb: what if we lost that piece of paper or someone found it?
The Journey to Satoshi’s Choice
That anxiety set us on a journey: hours of Googling, consulting ChatGPT, experimenting with stamps, and testing different materials throughout 2024. We also sought advice from colleagues and seasoned bitcoin veterans who had faced similar challenges, particularly with bulky metal backups that are hard to transport discreetly and difficult to hide. Eventually, we found the perfect solution: Tyvek, a high-tech material developed by technology leader DuPont, known for its tear resistance and water- and moisture-proof properties. We tested the most durable permanent marker, ensuring your seed phrases would remain perfectly legible even after ten years.
